We have small red squirrels here on campus, much smaller than their larger cousins elsewhere. What they lack in size, however, they make up for in sheer chutzpah. One day, while walking to lunch, I saw what appeared to be a bagel rolling rapidly across the grounds. Closer inspection revealed that a squirrel had seized the bagel, which was twice the size of its head, and was hauling it off to its underground larder.

It’s only a matter of time before they begin insisting on having coffee with their baked goods. Highly caffeinated rodents: another sign of the impending apocalypse.  Run for the hills!

Okay, who put Election Day so close to Halloween? Somebody had a sense of humor, that’s all I can say. For more funny stuff, check out the video “Partisan Pumpkins Try to Squash Each Other”. Tres amusing!

Halloween is my very favorite holiday of all time so I thought I’d present you, gentle reader, with some fun Halloween links.

Democraticstuff.com has all sorts of amusing special interest buttons including ones for the living dead. In the interest of fairness, I did check out Republicanstuff.com, but unfortunately they just have very vanilla McCain/Palin buttons.

Tom Nardone, the twisted genius behind Extreme Pumpkins, is back with a sequel, Extreme Pumpkins II.  I’ve mentioned his site before, but it’s well worth a visit. The 2008 Pumpkin Carving Contest winners are very …well…”cool” is one word for them. “Demented” would be another.

The only thing worse than cannibal pumpkins is exploding pumpkins. Apparently, heavy rains in the New England area are causing some giant pumpkins to crack up.

Not that he wasn’t before, you understand, but his latest creation, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog has simply re-affirmed his standing.  During the Hollywood Writer’s Strike, Joss and a couple of his homies got together and the result is a professional, polished episode that was designed to be broadcast over the ‘Net. Dr. Horrible is vintage Joss–funny, poignant, and thoughtful. Plus, it’s a musical, too. How can you go wrong?

Neil Patrick Harris stars as the wanna-be supervillain Dr. Horrible who secretly pines for Penny (Felicia Day), a sweet girl trying to do good works in an uncaring city. Unfortunately, Dr. Horrible only succeeds in introducing Penny to his nemesis, Captain Hammer, a self-centered superhero played by Nathan Fillion.  To get Penny back, Dr. Horrible plots his revenge–with unexpected results.

I took the Dresden Files quiz and discovered that I’m a Knight of the Cross (see below). In the Dresdenverse, that means that I’m one of the men and women chosen to bear one of the three holy swords–Amoracchius (Love), Fidelacchius (Faith), and Esperacchius (Hope)–and to do battle with the dark forces that stalk the earth. Taste my letter opener, evil doers!

Human powered search engine

“Human powered search engine” is Internetese that means that real people read, summarize, and rate various Internet resouces. Brijit is more of a serious, current awareness service. The others–Mahalo, ChaCha, Squidoo–seem to be more socially oriented and less informative. Not mentioned is the Librarians’ Index to the Internet which I highly recommend. Real librarians check out, summarize, and catalog internet resources for you. Sadly, this fine organization recently just had its budget cut by 50%. Cruel hard as Samwise Gamgee would say. Check out their weekly current awareness feature while you still can. Available by e-mail and RSS.

Book Art

Proving that necessity is sometimes the mother of art as well as invention, this is a little, thrown-together video done as a marketing demo for Marion Bataille’s upcoming art book, ABC3D. It is a pop-up book of the alphabet, but that bland description really doesn’t do it justice.

Addictive new game

A warning: check out the below game at your own risk. It’s very simple to play–just line up the jewels to make rows of three or more, but whoa baby, is it addictive! Bejeweled reminds me of those jump-the- peg board games we played when we were kids. You can only move jewels that are directly above, below, or to the side, however, so there’s no moving from several squares away. You don’t need to download anything to play Bejeweled. However, if you want to play other on-line games from this site, you will need to download one of their plug-ins.
