A martial theme this year. Not sure why, just the songs that caught my ear.
A beautiful rendition of “The Minstrel Boy” song by Charlie Zahm, accompanying himself on the bodhran. I first heard this song on an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation (“The Wounded”) sung by actor Colm Meaney and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since.
I like the sheer rage The Dropkick Murphys put into their rendition of “Fields of Athenry”. “Fields” was written in the 1970s by Pete St. John and it is about the Great Famine in Ireland.
“Garryowen” goes to prove my theory that the Irish and the Scots between them wrote all the songs–or at least all the songs that Americans love so well. The well known theme song of the 7th Cavalry is actually an Irish tune.
And finally, to close out, a beautiful rendition of “Loch Lomond” by Rowena Taheny, Laurel MacDonald & Eleanor McCain from their album, “Irish Roses: Women of Celtic Song.”
